<p>We all want our bodies to function properly and reap the benefits that this brings. Just as anything else in life it takes work to be successful. No matter what your age, good health doesn&#8217;t just happen, it takes some discipline and perhaps change. Children and teenagers tend to eat what tastes good, not necessarily what is good for them, and that is why it is important for young people to consider their eating habits and begin to develop a lifestyle of healthy foods. The nutrients needed while our bodies are maturing are vital to the outcome of enjoying not only our youth but also in our middle and latter years.</p>
<p><span id="more-75"></span></p>
<p>I think we all know we need to eat our fruits and vegetables and stay away from processed food and this is not about what foods you should or should not eat, but I thought about some bad habits that we sometimes fall into so here a few reminders or maybe some new things to consider when it comes to eating, especially when we eat out.</p>
<p>Add variety to your diet and especially the way you cook vegetables. Variety is the spice of life and many people don&#8217;t eat a balanced diet. Forty percent of Americans don&#8217;t eat fruit daily, and 30 percent don&#8217;t consume any dairy or soy products regularly. On average, Americans get less than half of the 25-30 grams of fiber they need a day. Eating a diverse diet that is low in calories and high in nutrients decreases aging from arterial and immune dysfunction. It&#8217;s important to eat from the five food groups and discovering ways to add variety to your meals, especially vegetables.</p>
<p>Be the CEO every time you eat out, don&#8217;t pay for something that ages you. Learn to ask questions of your server-staff. If you are unfamiliar with the dish, ask about the size of the portion, how it&#8217;s prepared, if white rolls are served, can you substitute, etc. Remember, restaurants want repeat clientele and be sure to give your server a nice tip for making sure your requests are taken care of.</p>
<p>Keep your portions energy-giving, not energy-sapping. A good rule-of-thumb is to eat until satisfied. Restaurants differ with portion size, so if your order portion is to much for you, don&#8217;t be embarrassed to ask for a to-go container. There is no need to stuff yourself. Your body spends a lot of energy on the digestive process, that is why when we eat to much, we will eventually become tired. Also, be aware of the time of day of your meal when looking at the menu. Carbs are okay for breakfast and lunch but reduce your carb intake the later it gets in the day.</p>
<p>Stop eating as soon as you start to feel full. This cannot be emphasized enough. Because your stomach is roughly the size of a fist, eating meals larger than your fist can stretch your stomach beyond what&#8217;s comfortable or healthy. This is why both weight-loss and weight-gain programs include reasonable portions a few times a day. The type of food may vary, but not the frequency. Try eating a little healthy fat first before the meal with a pause before the rest of the meal. Remember, keep your eyes as big as your stomach at a buffet!</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t eat absentmindedly. Eating can be an unconscious act. We lift the fork, swallow absentmindedly, and lift the fork again. Sometimes we overeat because we just aren&#8217;t paying attention. Be actively conscious of what you&#8217;re eating and why. Use all of your senses to enjoy the color, texture, smell, and flavor of your food. Not only will you enjoy your food more, but you&#8217;ll also slow down your rate of consumption</p>
<p>Incorporate some form of exercise on consistent basis. A balance of cardio and resistance exercises is optimal. It&#8217;s important to retain muscle mass and work the most important muscle, the heart. We all have different fitness levels so just start where your at. Go for a walk, ride a bike, go hiking, swimming, make it enjoyable as much as possible. Resistance training can be free weights or resistance bands, the important thing is to start if your not, or continue if you are. Exercise has so many benefits, so get off that couch.</p>
<p>Be a savvy snacker. Think nutrient rich and calorie lean. This may involve a taste-buds makeover. Nutritious food, or empty food, it&#8217;s your choice. You will find the more active you are, the craving for junk food will fall the wayside and you will want something with some &#8217;something&#8217; in it for you.</p>
<p>Avoid simple carbohydrates and simple sugars. Carbohydrates were meant to be complex, and simple sugars in food are absorbed quickly in the intestine and increase the amount of sugar in the blood for at least one to two hours, which is not good. Avoid foods that are laden with carbohydrates from brown sugar, corn sweetener, dextrose, fructose (high fructose corn sweetener), glucose, corn syrup, honey, invert sugar, lacrose, maltose, malt syrup, molasses, raw sugar, sucrose, syrup, and table sugar.</p>
<p>Drink lots of water. Water, water, and yes, water. I am a huge proponent of making sure I drink lots of water. Fresh juices also.</p>
<p>Take the right vitamin/mineral supplements. Find out which ones are right for you and be<br />
consistent.</p>
<p>Remember, eat to live, not live to eat</p>

<p>Two-thirds of all Americans are either overweight or obese. Forty-eight percent of people in Europe are overweight. In the United States adolescence obesity is between 16 percent and 33 percent. We are a mighty nation capable of blowing away our enemies with sophisticated weaponry built by man. Yet, we continue to lose the obesity epidemic that rages in our children.</p>

<h4>Obesity &#8211; The Perpetual Cycle</h4>
<p>The cause of childhood obesity is very treatable. Lack of healthy diet and exercise are the main culprits. Obesity is responsible for 325,000 deaths annually. In 2003 obesity cost $75 billion dollars because of its long, expensive treatment.</p>

<p>People who want successful weight loss often think about reducing the amount of food they eat. This may be good but is not necessarily the best thing to do for safe weight loss. In fact, depending on the amount you reduce your food intake, it may even be dangerous to your health. So how do you lose weight effectively and safely? Here are some points you should consider when trying to lose those extra pounds:</p>

<h4>Beware of Low Calorie Diets</h4>
<p>Most people think that trimming down the calories can alone shed off unwanted weight. Probably this is because of the fad there is in advertising about low-calorie food products and beverages. What people don&#8217;t know is that this could be dangerous, because when they decrease their calorie intake to below the required levels, the body begins to digest fat. This may sound good, but it isnt really. Burning fat needs a lot of energy. Since there is not much energy in the body to facilitate metabolism of fat, it will run at a very slow pace resulting in fatigue, illness and a weak immune system.</p>
<p>A low-calorie diet is also compensated for by the body burning muscle. People on this type of diet who revert back to their old eating habits end up regaining some, if not all, the weight they have previously shed. This consists mainly of fat. And since fats have more volume per mass than muscle, they end up having the same weight as before but with more body bulk. In losing weight, you should keep in mind that you must lose excess fats only.</p>
<p>However, one can try eating small meals at more frequent intervals. This way the body will not think that it is being starved and will not store food as fat.</p>
<h4>Eat the Right Food</h4>
<p>You may have considered junking the crash diet option but you should also not forget to watch what you are eating. Variety must always be considered, so that you get the necessary nutrients from your diet. It is also healthier to eat food which is roasted, steamed or broiled rather than fried. It is important to include a lot of fibre in the diet. Frequent re-hydration is also necessary.</p>
<h4>Improve Muscle Mass</h4>
<p>Muscles burn calories when they work; they even do so at rest. Unlike fats which just lie around, bulge around the pants and dangle beneath the sleeves, muscles burn calories all-day round. With this fact, one can start losing weight by increasing muscle mass. The more muscles, the less fat will be left. This is attainable starting with working out with resistance exercises.</p>
<h4>Dont Forget Aerobics</h4>
<p>Aerobics are not only good for the heart by increasing cardio-vascular endurance. Aerobics also help in increasing lean muscle mass while simultaneously decreasing excess body fat. Aside from these, aerobics make the metabolic process more efficient and its rate high, even after a long while.
